The Role
Research Engineering (RE) are looking for a suitably qualified and motivated CNC Machinist to join our Mechanical Fabrication team specialising in research and prototyping manufacturing.
Reporting to the Leader of Mechanical Fabrication (LMFAB) and the Leader of Precision Machining (LPM), the successful applicants will work under general direction and have demonstrated experience and knowledge in conventional and advanced CNC Machining.
The successful applicant will have the ability to undertake the following to achieve outcomes and supply solutions required by DST and Defence clients:
- Carry out complex mechanical fabrications using computer numerical control (CNC) and manual machining.
- Interpret technical drawings, sketches and CAD models to successfully manufacture prototype mechanical components.
- Have an excellent working knowledge in the computer aided manufacturing discipline, to achieve ideal strategy for multi axis tool paths at complex levels.
- Experience in working to engineering specifications.
- The ability to apply and adapt bespoke manufacturing techniques.
- Manufacturing jigs and fixtures to complete complex fabrication tasks.
- Accurate work planning, materials and time estimation.
- Willingness to learn new technology in our manufacturing facility

RTO capabilities accelerate and protect Defences science and technology advances and promote a collaborative, compliant, safe and healthy workplace.

- Emerging digital science capabilities, including computational and data intensive science, research data and information and laboratory and experimental systems

RTO also provides specialised research enabling capabilities to other groups and services with Defence, the Australian Intelligence community, our allies and/or our partners in industry and academia.
Research Engineering provide professional and advanced manufacturing to DST to enable delivery of products, prototypes and models for research, development and experimentation. RE fuses talented professional engineering and technical staff with world’s best design software and cutting edge fabrication capabilities. Through design, fabrication and prototyping, RE facilitates the transition of applied research to industry for production of military capability.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a motivated Machinist who’ll be able to understand the needs of our varied customers and stakeholders and produce results according to their requirements. This is a unique opportunity for an advanced level CNC Machinists to step into a highly specialised research and prototype environment.
The successful candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate that they have:
- Extensive industry experience with advanced 3-4-5 Axis CNC programing and operating.
- Previous experience in programming & operating Fanuc, Mazak, Heidenhain & Siemens controlled CNC Machines.
- Siemens NX or VISI CAM programming experience.
- Proven ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplined team, contributing positively to team outcomes and working relationships.
- Willingness to grow knowledge through training and mentoring other staff on technical issues.
- Demonstrate positive APS behaviours such as diligence, professionalism, integrity and accountability.
- An understanding of Quality Management Principles, WHS Principle and workplace practices.
