Tasmania tackles twin asbestos finds
More asbestos contamination has forced the shutdown of building sites.
Construction is resuming at two Hobart sites after a temporary shut down following evidence of asbestos-contaminated infill being used.
A hotel construction site in central Hobart was shut down last Friday, while the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) tried to stop work at Glenorchy Primary School this week.
It appears that land fill from the Parliament Square redevelopment site – which had to stop several times due to asbestos – is now being used in both the $4 million school upgrade and the hotel site.
WorkSafe Tasmania has inspected both sites and found asbestos levels to be below national standards.
Mark Cocker, WorkSafe director of industry safety, says further tests are still underway.
“The sub contractor responsible for the delivery of this crushed concrete fill has been served with a prohibition notice preventing any further use of this product until such time as WorkSafe Tasmania receives independent occupational hygienists reports,” he said.
More information is expected by the end of the week.
