Port price hike sparks fight
Freedom of Information applications have been lodged in an effort to find out the details of a rumoured huge price increase at the Port of Melbourne.
There are reports that the Port will raise fees at some terminals by over 750 per cent, making it the most expensive port in the world
“We have lodged an online Freedom of Information application to the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance for access to documents relating to rent for West Swanson Dock,” said Paul Scurrah, Managing Director and CEO of DP World Australia.
“We have also written to the Port of Melbourne Corporation for more information on the proposed rental increase determination.”
“We continue to be concerned about the downstream impacts the proposed 750-plus per cent rental increase will have on the Victorian and Tasmanian economies.”
Under the Port Of Melbourne Corporation’s plan, rental costs on DP World Melbourne's West Swanson Terminal would rise from $15 per square metre and the increase will see that rise to $120 per square metre.
The FOI applications cover documents from late 2014 that recording the considerations around rent at the Port.
Port of Melbourne customers have been holding emergency meeting since the rent increase was hinted-at in December 2014.
They say around 20 per cent of volume may have to move from Melbourne to ports in Adelaide or Sydney if the price is too high.
