Police cast a wide net on truck and bus checks
Traffic and Highway Patrol Officers have had heavy transporters in their sights during Operation Austrans, the four week program aims to sweep all facets of heavy vehicle compliance.
So far Officers have tagged hundreds of offenses in Australia and New Zealand, after pulling over close to 3000 trucks and buses in New South Wales alone.
Offenses have been widespread including 249 counts of speeding, 57 unlicencesed drivers, 173 unregistered trucks and over 3000 combined log book, defect, fatigue and permit issues.
Acting Superintendent Mark Crelley, Acting Operations Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said he was still concerned by the large number of trucks caught speeding.
"Despite having over 1200 highway patrol officers on duty throughout Operation Stay Alert during the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend to ensure motorists got to and from their destinations safely, issues concerning heavy vehicle compliance were still apparent," A/Supt Crelley said.
Operation Austrans continues this week.
