Mining paused during NSW fatality review
The NSW Government is conducting a review of a fatal accident at a gold mine near Orange.
A 28-year-old father of two died after being struck by a piece of underground machinery at the Ridgeway Mine on Sunday night.
The Department of Trade and Investment has announced it will review the circumstances around the incident and prepare a safety report.
Production at the mine has been suspended while the investigation is carried out.
Russ Collison from the Australian Workers' Union said it showed the dangers of the often-deadly industry.
“The mining industry is a fairly unique industry and so you do form a bond,” Mr Collison said.
“Your work mates, your work colleagues are normally the people who mix with socially as well because of the unusual shift patterns that are worked in the industry.
“So that will have an ongoing effect on people on that particular site.
“There are very few other industries that you could probably put in the same category in terms of the hazards that you confront every day.
“There's a lot of unforeseen issues and problems that you can confront very easily and that's why safety is at the forefront.”
