The Federal Government has launched its new mentoring program aimed at supporting apprentices in the construction industry.

 

The program was officially launched after a meeting between Minister for Skills, Senator Chris Evans, met with the Housing Industry Association’s Chief Executive – Industry Programs Brenton Gardner

 

“The unfortunate reality of training in Australia is that the completion rate for directly indentured apprentices is only 48%,” Mr Gardner said.

 

“Mentoring is a free one-on-one service to assist young people as they adjust to expectations of work and training, and hopefully will reverse this alarming trend.”

 

“The mentor can provide a ‘sounding board’ to apprentices that are part of the program, and either give support directly or refer them on to further professional support services for their career or personal life.”

 

HIA has been funded to offer mentoring to directly indentured apprentices through the Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Program.

 

"Poor completion rates among apprentices point to the need for more support to be provided which is why the Government is also investing in mentoring programs." Senator Evans said.

 

Twelve experienced mentors appointed by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) will help apprentices complete their training in construction and manufacturing thanks to a $1.3 million grant from the Government.

 

"There is clear evidence that mentoring apprentices improves the apprenticeship experience and is critical when it comes to navigating the difficulties that can arise.”
