Customs to cut criminal supply chain links
Australian Customs and Border Protection is cracking down on dodgy figures in the international supply chain.
In just the last few weeks authorities have suspended a customs warehouse licence, a corporate customs broker licence, and three customs broker licences over allegations of unscrupulous behaviour.
They have also raided an address at Lane Cove in New South Wales.
The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) says the matters relate to the alleged delivery of imported goods without the proper authority, alleged fraud and the embezzlement of Commonwealth revenue.
ACBPS national manager of special investigations, Anthony Seebach, says there are still more customs brokers that will have their licences suspended or cancelled.
He expects there will be loss of work, pecuniary penalties or jail time as a result.
“The service is using its investigative capabilities to target high-risk elements in the supply chain; we are also appreciative of tip offs about dishonest behaviour from concerned and law abiding members of the trading community,” Mr Seebach said.
“As we continue these investigations, it would be foolish to think anyone can wait us out or fly under our radar.
