Cameco approval uncovered
Media investigations reveal a curious timeline for the approval of a new uranium mine.
Australia’s largest untapped supply of uranium is located about 800 kilometres from Perth, in the far north of Western Australia's Goldfields region.
Reports this week say a proposed mine in the area by Canadian giant Cameco was approved by former federal environment minister Melissa Price without key protections, which were repeatedly recommended by the Government's own experts.
The approval occurred on the eve of the 2019 election, following intervention by Cameco and then-resources minister Matt Canavan, who called for the process to be expedited.
